The Importance of Mobile within the Work Environment

It is no secret that we are ever evolving to the mobile space for the majority of our internet consumption. While it is generally accepted that mobile utilization is for individual leisure use only, this mindset is beginning to shift. More and more companies are seeking mobile solutions. Increasingly businesses are wanting seamless transitions with their applications, whether enterprise or home grown solutions, no matter what device is being used. Personally, I am experiencing a growing need to provide web based database applications that can be utilized and accessed on different screens and devices, specifically mobile devices. Management is starting to appreciate the efficiencies that can be gained with ubiquitous access of information, for example being able to update a cyber-asset listing from your phone while working in the field or submitting a help desk ticket remotely without using a laptop or desktop.

The article also stressed the importance of keeping these applications up to date and addressing bugs and inefficiencies relatively quickly. Individuals tasked with the creation of in house solutions must be skilled at the very least in how to make their applications work on mobile devices, as negating this could result in dissatisfaction from management and project failure.

My organization has started to deploy mobile versions of many of our apps, particularly those that are third party and already have the apps developed. We do allow for BYOD and have a guest network for regular schlumps and then a private guest network for physicians because they are …special… Our work is increasingly mobile and many of our monitoring systems have secure apps combined with messaging features to allow for instant discussion between care providers. This is huge because our employees can be anywhere but still connected to the important things going on with the patients. On the tech side, we have mobile monitoring apps for our IT systems and are *slowly* replacing our 1980’s style pagers with a mobile app paging system. But who doesn’t want a one-way text pager?!
